Forest School 2019/20

Forest School is… “an inspirational process that offers children… regular opportunities to achieve, develop confidence and self esteem through hands-on learning experiences in a woodland environment.” Forest School (England) Network.

Forest School is a child led and child centred way of teaching children. It provides the opportunity for everyone to succeed as the learning is self-directed. They children choose the activities, plan for future sessions and are free to learn in the way that suits them best. While it looks and feels like play to the children, they are learning so many valuable lifelong skills such as:
• Team working
• Conflict resolution
• Risk assessment
• Creativity
• Problem solving
• Social skills
• Independence
• Resilience
• Physical skills
• Self-awareness
We teach these skills through the provision of a range of activities including:
• Den making
• Tree climbing
• Fire lighting
• Cooking over a campfire
• Tool use
• Team games
• Nature crafts
• Pond dipping
• Simple woodland management (litter picking/ clearing paths)

The aim of Forest School is to enable children to become independent confident learners, not just for school but for life. We are able to support children with a range of additional needs and have many years of experience of doing so.

Please note that the sessions in schools are based on Forest School principles but are not ‘Forest School’. Forest School sessions have much smaller groups which allows a planned approach to their learning and more access to tools and fire. After school clubs focus on enabling child led play.
